Thinking on Suze's rants: my /other/ main issue with Relenabashers is that, yeah, they're like Relena themselves, which is why they hate her. And /then/ they write a Duo who is Exactly Like Relena.
Thankyewdrivethrough.
Actually! Actually, I'd just like to point out that I Don't Care About How The Japanese Write Yaoi, I'm Writing It How I Like. Japanese people are Not better than the English or the Americans - each nation is as bad or as good as the other - they do not have the monopoly on male/male relationships. According to most stuff i've heard, gay men in Japan /despise/ girl-aimed yaoi and shounen-ai: it's seen primarily a PARODY, whether of seinen manga styles or of gay men themselves.
Just look at it in visual terms: yaoi and Shounen-ai manga, yaoi and s-ai djs feature /bishonen/. These tend to have the huge_unnaturally_wobby_eyes of the traditional /female/. Your average piece of girl-targeted yaoi Does Not Care That Its So-Called-'Male' characters act like girls, because its audience are supposed to think: "oh! he's feminine and caring like the okama! he's a better man for me! there is no threat here in his masculinity!" or "oh! he's hurt and worried! he's also really cute! he's trapped in Doomed Love with (designated_seme)! I Feel His Pain!"
objectification or identification, like Suze says.
But, you see, they don't care that much about Characterisation, or about Presenting Men Who Are Men But Just Happen To Be Gay. It's a straight girls' fantasy genre, not high art. It's Popular Culture: popular culture is not often clever.
So, you know, I don't take that much notice of what the Japanese do, and I certainly don't hold it up as the Benchmark Of What Yaoi Should Be Like. I need knowledge of japanese culture to understand, say, why the okama doesn't necessarily have to be gay - but that's japanese culture, not the traditions of manga plotlining. I need knowledge of japanese culture to write Kira, because he's japanese and lives in japan: not to justify my urge to write him, oh, impregnating Setsuna and setting up a happy loving gay commune in a really large house even though he's run away from home and do you /know/ what land prices are like these days? and there's absolutely no issues about their living together like that in domestic bliss and sets does the cooking but he's really bad at it and they're not going to school or working and what's more all the doctors understand and nobody minds even though they have no money just their Love to Keep Them Warm.
Sorry. You wanted the japanophile_sl0re? Third door on the right.

Hi, my name is harpy, and I don't agree with Jeanne. Not there, not, if fact, at all. By her definition, I really /am/ a slasher. Oh, well. And, probably, the kind of writer whose stories leave people cold, and who would like to know that if they do, although i don't think i could do much about it. Because, you know, I'm quite devastatingly technical about writing: too much litcrit at an early age.
Plus, you know, I don't like aesthe because they assume that US law == world law. Hi, aesthe, in /my/ country the legal age for /whatever/ sexual act that is legal (including gay sex, thank you european law! we were so /wrong/ a couple years ago, even though we didn't legally know lesbians existed) is sixteen. Six-teen. Say it with me: The US is /not/ the world. You are only a /country/, and, you know, the way some of your people act makes some other countries consider you occasionally a little backward. And i'm not sending my fucking birth certificate to california because you think you're special. I have /better/ things to send over the pond, like pocky and cds.
There, got that one over with.
I think it has been conclusively proved that Sarah is the High Lord And Master of this particular set of benches along the long trestle tables of yaoifen in the great Dining Hall of blogworld. All hail Sarah! We memerant on schedule, o Ruler. ^_^
Is diaryand down? I can't read Prufrock. >_< If he's /said/ anything, that is...
So, anyway. Yeah. Wow. Maybe i should pontificate! Pontification is fun. No, wait, don't have the energy.
Never mind. It's not like anyone listens to me, anyway. I am fated to be passed over. ^_^
