Uhh... they called them "the heathen?" I don't know too much about portuguese/japanese relations, only late Tokugawa interaction with the French, Americans and British. And you're probably right, the Jesuits /would/ have written in Latin, even though it was church latin which /is/ highly corrupted. Since French as the international language of diplomacy wouldn't have come in, right?. But, you know, speaking for the grammar fasci (grammar fasces! twelve sticks for power within and power without which we use to Beat In The Heads Of The Illiterate!), I personally have very little against mixed-root neologisms. So long as they /sound/ good. (This comes from, of course, being British, since we are the country who changed their commonly accepted spelling to look prettier. Because 'colour' is /so/ much more pleasing than 'color': same with 'foetid' and 'fetid'.)

Um. Anyway. The root of the english 'japanese' (and the french japonais, the german japanesisch, etc) is /actually/ meaning-wise the same as 'nippon': the chinese jih pun, meaning sunrise. Japonicus is the latin adjective meaning 'japanese', according to the long-winded route I just took through a dictionary of entymology. So... yeah. Probably 'japonicus'.

Plus, you know, I snerked loudly at the whole manservant-called-Riff thing. Although I love Riff dearly, I've decided. And the bits-of-english-newspaper made me giggle, too. Mind you, I'm /so/ confused by the katakana it isn't even funny. I've decided Dr Disraeli's first name is Jasper and the cute li'l 'maid' (awww!) is just going to be called Marie, because My Brain Can't Handle Engrish Names. But, but, gah.
