Subject:those filthy little angels never want to sleep with me again
Time:3:05 pm.
Mood:oh for heavens' sake.
Music:hefner - the sweetness lies within.

Oh, honestly, you lot. I disappear for a couple of days and this is what happens? Tcha, look at you and your rational discussions.

In general, I think, the idea is that non-USAmericans are so surrounded with US cultural product that they must needs have absorbed all of US culture by a process of osmosis. What else is a cultural hegemony for?

Especially the non-US people in fandoms, because most media fandoms that aren't anime are all about the US cultural product. And if you watch enough stuff made by USAmericans you're bound - bound, I tell you! - to internalise the sentence structure, words used, slang terms, geography of specific towns, etcetera. Given that the US is a monoculture and all that. It's just like how non-Japanese who watch anime really assimilate and understand Japanese culture, especially when they watch it with subtitles rather than dubbing. Also how if you follow Stargate SG-1 you learn how important the concept of the chain of command is in a current-day military institution and how that kind of prevents SamAndJack or JackAndDaniel (or any couple within the same unit especially where one of them is the CO) from having a happy, public, yenta-assisted romance, even if in the case of JackDaniels we ignore the whole don't-ask-don't-tell sexuality issue.

But who cares? After all, it's fanfiction! fantasy! It doesn't have to have realism /or/ naturalism!

In other words, YOU ARE ALL TO BLAME, EVERY SINGLE LAST ONE OF YOU, AND ESPECIALLY YOU RIGHT THERE.

And I would still rather have HP characters in fic talking as USAmericans do than any bastardisation of a "bloody fuck", a "pissed drunk", a... a whatever it is. It is the 'daijoubu ka?' of the HP fandom*.

* One of these days I will make an icon that says 'everything I learnt about british culture** I learnt from harry potter fanfiction'.

** HP is not about England or Britain, anyway, it is about ALBION.

While in the throes of comment replies, I'm going to throw this one out -

In HP fandom, where does 'sticking to canon' end and 'accepting JKR's authorial intent as be all and end all' begin? Can it be defined? Is it different from other fandoms? Why would you say this is so?

(haha I am so having a Charmian worldserpent moment here.)
