Rec lists are hard. To make this easier, I think I'll go the Biblical route and have everything go two by two like animals into the ark. And speaking of animals...
Two Magical Realism Fics that the Llama Enjoyed: A Sheepish Kind of Love The holidays aren't really the holidays without a least one pop boy turning into an animal, right? This time, JC's a sheep. But he's not the first pop boy to be sheepish. I think perhaps he's the last, though. Or Chris will have some explaining to do. (Chris/JC; length: 3800)
Sparkly souls slow dancing Lance glows in the dark. But not all of the time. It takes Kevin to finally put it together and know why Lance glows. This fic is just... come on, how could I ever resist a glowing Lance? And how could Chris resist? (Chris/Lance; length: 3200)
Two Vampire-ish Fics: (Okay, so I knew there were going to be vampire fics this year. A friend and I bet on how many, and I think both of us were too low if you count all the different ways vampires showed up. These aren't the only vamps I'm reccing, but you'll see.) The Black Fang In my notes about all the fics, I called this "Vampire Diner." It is quite funny and I'm delighted with the world and how it sort of reminds me of my AU warehouse that's full of all sorts of magical beings. This is a similar world in that I'm sure just figuring out the little details of the supernatural/magical beings populating the diners filled the author with joy. And it's funny, too. Lance is a naive vampire and Chris is a weredog who likes to go around naked--in both of his forms. Read it for the delights of its world (and I'm not even a big AU fan). (Chris/JC; length: 12,000)
for this world to be unbroken This one was "Vampires of the Apocalypse!" in my notes. And it's my first BSB rec! It's dark, the world isn't a pretty place and our four BSBers are on some sort of quest. They are surprised along the way by the reappearance of Kevin. And oh, a lot of this fic hinges on how much they all want Kevin back and they want to trust Kevin, but they can't be sure yet. Maybe he's been turned into a vampire. There's more plot than just that and a couple big surprises, but oh, the longing of the boys to be whole again, and AJ's more private longing for Kevin, makes this a powerful fic. (AJ/Kevin; length: 10,200)
Two Quick Snapshots: Not A Creature Was Stirring I called this one "eyeliner UST". I'm reccing it because it creates one really strong image that I think summarizes the whole AJ/Kevin dynamic well. It's hot and it leaves things unresolved, and they may just always have to be that way. I think the image is pretty unforgettable. (AJ/Kevin; length: 1500)
Dazed and Confused This fic doesn't create quite as visual a snapshot as the other, but it summarizes the Choey dynamic in a way that... well, in my feedback for it, I said "it mixes what is/what was/what will be, and how Chris is sort of mourning things he hasn't lost yet and yet the fic's mood isn't all sad." (Chris/Joey; length: 1300)
Two Fics that Made Me Fall in Love with JuNi: I often like the idea of JuNi better than I like JuNi fic. Here's two fics that help me buck that trend. Playing The Numbers Canon JuNi for the WIN! \o/ This should be like the JuNi primer. It goes through many of the inter-band encounters over the years and through them all, Justin and Nick are ridiculously hot and also, at least in Nick's case, sort of adorable and clueless. This fic seriously made me fall in love with them. (Justin/Nick; length: 6100)
Temperance Okay, you know how I said I'm not a huge AU fan? Well, there always has to be exceptions to the rule, especially when I'm a huge Laura Ingalls Wilder fan and this is pretty much Little Town of Vampires on the Prairie. Oh, man. There's fake-dating, there's vampire drama. There's a point where I started weeping because I thought maybe something awful had happened to one of my favorite boys. Chris is an ostrich farmer. AJ is a beekeeper. There's the full BSB & NSYNC cast here, yo. And it's totally worth setting aside a few hours for. (Justin/Nick, JC/Lance; length: 63,200)
And Two Fics with Coffee Shops because SeSa isn't SeSa without Hot Coffeeish Beverages: Okay, you're never going to believe me again when I say I'm not an AU fan. But! But! I love coffee shops, especially over the holidays. And both of these are quite nice even without the coffee element. In fact, the coffee is somewhat minor in the second. But I can't be alone in my love of sparkly coffee fic, so I rec these, too. Mistletoe Man JC thinks the barista at the place near work is hot, but little does he know that Justin is a coffee shop hero--and he's going to need one! (JC/Justin; length: 3900)
The Most Craziest Wonderful Time of the Year AJ works at a Japanese garden (or so I'm assuming because of the koi pond) and JC is Orange Sweater Guy. Mostly this is a story of JC being extremely busy and hard to get a date with and AJ being persistent and not letting JC's insane schedule become the excuse that keeps them apart. It's a very charming fic in the normal lives!AU vein. (AJ/JC; length: 4500)
I think I should stop there, though I could rec two with crazy aliens and two with super heros and two with awesome PowerPoint presentations (okay, only one with PowerPoints, but I'd throw a FaceBook fic in there, too, to even things out)... make your own entry or read 5 entries |

five lives of crime, by mumblemutter pg-13ish, peter/nathan, AU
notes: this started as a petrellicest version of burnt money/plata quemada (excellent movie, everyone should watch!), but at some point there came a realization that it was never going to be completed, and so what you get is a collection of AU sketches instead, where peter and nathan are criminal-type people doing criminal-type things.

bonus outtake from the dr. horrible-inspired one that didn't actually get written, but seemed an amusing idea at the time (sylar would have been captain hammer):
Their big Plan of course, is the Nakamura Time Machine, which unfortunately isn't so much a time machine right now as it is a means for transporting you, within a period of four to five hours, from the laboratory to the lobby of St John's Hospital. Always, unerringly, St John's hospital. They've even marked the spot it appears in with a big X, after an unfortunate incident with a patient who'd only come in complaining of ulcers. Peter once drove down from their mansion to the hospital and had to wait exactly four hours and thirty-five minutes for the machine to re-appear, so even as a means of transport, it was highly ineffective. He called Nathan, every twenty minutes, precisely, to let him know, "I'm still waiting. It still hasn't shown up. Big damned time machine."
Sometimes, Nathan wished that he had someone else as a brother instead. Even Sylar seemed preferable.
But only sometimes. make your own entry or read 1 entry |

There's all these "Year in Writing" memes going 'round right now. Makes me realize how much I failed on one of my goals for '09. :(
I "wrote" two fics this year--and one of those was a remix, so, I'm not sure how much that counts.
I've got to get in gear! '10 can be my year! make your own entry or read 2 entries |

It's amazing what stress does -- I managed to knit a short-sleeved cardigan in two weeks.
I still need to block it and sew on the buttons, but other than that it's done.

A couple of weeks' worth of media intake.

Seriously, like *nine out of every ten* reviews of Valkyria Chronicles stop in the middle of the thing and take a paragraph to gush about how amazing and wonderful it is that you can get a couple of characters from Skies of Arcadia to join your party.
Which to me does a great job of illustrating the disconnect between (most) videogame reviewers...and most of the people who are actually likely to play a videogame nowadays. An overwhelming majority of whom simply have no idea what Skies of Arcadia was, or why they should care for characters from that thing showing up in the middle of their 2008 game.
Granted, my own experience with writing reviews is *very* rudimentary, but for all that's worth, shouldn't your goal as a reviewer be to reach out and inform - on their terms - the audience that you actually *do* have, rather than the one you hope you could have...
---
In the last couple of weeks, movies:
Avatar. Totally worth the money. Thing is, I can write about it for pages on end...and none of that will still adequately describe just the experience of watching it. Though what *totally* seals the deal for me is the sheer amount of attention to detail paid in crafting both the story and the world. If something is there on the screen at one point, there is a *very* good chance it will become relevant...at a much later point. Well, and, hey, the really simple things. How *would* a computer interface look like in 2156.
Also, why *is* there a rear-view mirror on a mech.
[both of those being questions that are in fact answered at certain points in that movie...]
Sherlock Holmes. Coming into this with no expectations whatsoever makes it...an amusing hour and a half or however long that actually was. *Not* expecting it to be anything actually 'Sherlock Holmes' as you think of 'Sherlock Holmes' is the key. Which is to say, for me, Sherlock Holmes the character is just one small part of the whole, the whole being those specific stories that have those characters in them, and nothing else. Ideally, if you call it 'Sherlock Holmes', I don't care who you cast or what his mannerisms are, but you need one or more of the stories as the framework that everything else is draped from.' *We* don't get to decide who Sherlock Holmes is and how he is; the author already did that. But, hey, as with so many other things nowadays, 'Sherlock Holmes' is just a brand that Guy Ritchie decided to tap into, so, hey, not like any of us have any right to stop him.
...though for all this is worth, just come into this expecting a Guy Ritchie movie set in a CG Victorian London, and you'll get *exactly* what you were expecting.
...also, this is why I never really could get into fanfiction of any sort...
Youth in Revolt. Which isn't even out for what, another two weeks? But I already feel kind of bad for Zach Galifianikis when the *trailer* makes it a point of stumbling over his last name, and then just calling him the guy from The Hangover.

The Times, once again like *the* definition of blissful ignorance:
"Dear Lower East Side
For years I defended you. I stood by you — faithful to a fault. When people said you were dirty or unkempt, I called it character. When they said you were running with a shady crowd and staying out too late, I said it was a phase. And when they shook their heads and said you’d sold out, I’d say you’d come back around...
...I’ll always remember our early days. I wasn’t exactly promiscuous, but I’d been around - Greenpoint, SoHo, East Village, Boerum Hill. You reminded me of a gracefully aging rocker, grizzled and sage. I admit it, I liked the cougar in you."
- Some dude, who 'lived at the corner of Ludlow and Rivington Streets for six years', on what in his mind is the only part of New York City that either matters, or possibly, even exists. make your own entry or read 2 entries |
